BODYBOARDING ADVICE

Bodyboarding, like actual surfing is a dynamic exhilarating sport. The same basic rules apply and for details on these see the surfing advice section. Arguably entry into the sport is easier and bodyboarding is a great way of getting out into the surfing environment and learning the basics without the extra cost that is associated with the surfboards themselves.

The first thing to consider when purchasing a bodyboard is the size. As a general rule of thumb, a  board should come up somewhere between the top of your hip and your navel. However, if you are just getting into the sport then there is no harm in having a board slightly too big. Too small, and the board will not provide enough float. This will make it far harder to run along the wave and also make it harder to catch the waves in the first place.

There are numerous types of bodyboard construction. However at a beginner to intermediate level there are two main types to focus on.

The first is the basic EPS (expanded polystyrene) type. These are very light, however there is very little structure to the board and therefore not very durable. They are ideal however as a budget entry into the sport for children.

The other type is the "slick bottomed" kind of board. These have a plastic ABS bottom. This provides stiffness,  which is directly related to both durability and performance. Prices of these boards can go up and up,  however certainly at a beginner/intermediate level there is no need to spend more than £65. At The Wetsuit Store prices for a slick bottomed board start at £20.00 inc leash and also postage!!!!!

Many boardboarders also use swimfins (stiffer flippers) for added performance. They not only help getting into the waves but also provide  extra speed an maneuverability. More often than not they are more comfortable when worn with a wetsuit sock, but do bare in mind that the sock will effectively increase the size of fin required.
